This book has evolved from a collection of our family recipes to an exploration of how far into self-sufficiency we can take our food and homecare. In a time where we have all kinds of modern conveniences and information, there are skills and knowledge that are disappearing. It is our hope that this book will help keep some of these old ways alive. Much of the knowledge and recipes come from our own trials and successes. Other information has been collected and researched for future needs, as this is a resource book for our family too.
‘The Self-Sufficient Kitchen’ has a strong homegrown, homemade and low carbohydrate focus, but is full of information and recipes for anyone wanting to live a more self-sufficient life.
I hope it is as useful for you as it is for us.
‘The Self-Sufficient Kitchen’ is sprial bound so it lies flat, so much easier when you’re busy in the kitchen!
Here’s what my awesome support crew have to say,
David Stewart – ‘The Self-Sufficient Kitchen’ is a book that embodies our life of the last twenty years. Our journey to self-sufficiency was launched out of necessity. We did not wake up one day with an idea to secure our own food systems, but were rather impelled by life itself, serving up some very difficult lessons.’
‘This book is the missing link in a modern homesteader’s life as it bridges the gap between garden and kitchen, especially for the time poor, and we’re all time poor!’
– Review from a Homesteader.

I love that this is a work by a whole family, and it is the work a whole family does. Rebecca, David, Summer and Genny live a life of self-reliance which in all truth, takes a lot of work and knowledge. The Stewarts have allowed us a peek inside their kitchen and given us a great deal of information in this book, from basic herbal medicines to creating your own sugar substitutes and everything in between, including the kitchen sink!

What a fabulous book! A solid foundation of knowledge on how have a self-reliant household. Beloved recipes like Beef Stroganoff, instructions on how to brine your own bacon or turn your fruit into jam, brew your own tea or ferment some fruit wine, nurse your heartburn or wounds, it’s all there in easy to follow instructions, wrapped up in a cover by an excellent young photographer!
